This is a multi-genre novel that ranges from thriller to love story. It highlights not only the challenges and burdens that the North Koreans deal with every day, but also the human connections, loyalty, and love that all human experience in their lives. This novel is perfection, but also a bit stressful to read. As you settle into this other world and empathizes with the struggles and connections these characters experience, you just might need a drink to settle your nerves. 2oz Soju
4oz Club Soda
1oz Lavender Simple Syrup (see below for recipe)
Blackberries
Stir the Soju, club soda, and simple syrup together, Crush 3-4 blackberries per glass and stir some more. Add ice and a sprig of lavender. Crack the book and read up + drink up.
Lavender Simple Syrup
1/2c Sugar
1/2c Water
4 Springs of Lavender
Heat sugar and water over medium-low heat until the sugar is dissolved. Stir regularly. Remove from heat and throw the lavender in the sugary liquid mess. Bruise the lavender a bit before you toss it in. Let it infuse for a couple of hours. Bottle it up and put it in the fridge for future use. It will last a few weeks.
