Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff is a novel that at first blush seems to be a simple story about a marriage spanning 24 years. But, that impression is quickly changed as the story moves forward into a layered look at personal connections, perspectives, what is said and unsaid, and motivations. Lotto and Matilda are a glamours couple who have cut a jealous-inducing picture for many of their friends and peers over the years. Lotta is a famous playwright and Matilda appears to be his ever-supportive wife. However, as the story unfolds we realize that this seemingly perfect relationship is teaming with ill-gotten successes, unrealized complications, and omitted histories. This book is written in two distinct points of view: Lotto and Matilda. The author, Groff, does a stellar job at drawing your attention to the many ways in which human interaction both brings people closer together as well as how people often chose what to disclose as if managing a public image, even when they love someone… maybe even more. Fates and Furies is a surprising book in so many ways. It is both the most beautiful vote for marriage as well as the most adamant anti-marriage statement. It demonstrates how in 24 years you can both fully know a person as well as experience portions of them as complete strangers. Full of surprises and opposites, this read needs a glass full of the same. This Heart of Gold is just the drink with an interesting combination of, among other things, tequila, mezcal, Aperol and tomatoes. Get this mixed up and sink into a good read.
