Drinking and reading - two of my most favorite past times. Wrap your fingers around a drink and get lost in the pages of a book.

The Cutting Room + The Napahatten

The Cutting Room + The Napahatten

“The Cutting Room” by Louise Welsh gets started when Rilke, a promiscuous and self-indulgent auctioneer, is asked to short sell the entire estate of a recently deceased wealthy man. Upon accepting this quick turn around, Rilke finds himself unearthing a hidden collection of sexually violent photographs and one-of-a-kind fetish books in a remote attic study. The relatively morally depraved and irresponsible Rilke finds himself compelled to find out more about the dead owner and help solve the deaths of the women in the photographs. Highly explicit and difficult to read at times, this story provides a memorable and captivating storyline for lovers of crime fiction. (Published by Canongate Books).

The main character is a boozer, and pretty much all the peripheral characters are boozers too. Cocktails, wine, hard alcohol - it doesn’t seem to matter. But, The Napahatten hits this bookish booze squarely with a combonation of red wine and bourbon. A bit indulgent and maybe doesn’t seem like a great idea… until it does!

The Napahatten

  • 60ml Bourbon
  • 15ml red wine syrup

Stir both ingredients over ice for 20 seconds. Strain and garnish with a cherry and get drinking.

Syrup is made from equal parts red wine (Shiraz suggested) and brown sugar that is simmered for 2-3 minutes.
