Bewilderment + Smoke on the Mountain
Bewilderment by Richard Powers is the story of Theo Byrne, a single father and astrobiologist, raising his 3rd-grade son, Robin, after the death of his wife. On the one hand, Robin is just a kid who spends time painting detailed pictures of endangered animals and enjoys the outdoors with his father. On the other hand, Robin struggles to control his impulses and is in fact on the verge of being expelled from 3rd grade for hitting his friend in the face. In a bid to keep Robin off psychoactive drugs, Theo gains access to an experimental neurofeedback treatment that requires Robin to be trained on the recorded brain waves of his deceased mother.
