#DrinkupReadup

Drinking and reading - two of my most favorite past times. Wrap your fingers around a drink and get lost in the pages of a book.

Bewilderment + Smoke on the Mountain

Bewilderment by Richard Powers is the story of Theo Byrne, a single father and astrobiologist, raising his 3rd-grade son, Robin, after the death of his wife. On the one hand, Robin is just a kid who spends time painting detailed pictures of endangered animals and enjoys the outdoors with his father. On the other hand, Robin struggles to control his impulses and is in fact on the verge of being expelled from 3rd grade for hitting his friend in the face. In a bid to keep Robin off psychoactive drugs, Theo gains access to an experimental neurofeedback treatment that requires Robin to be trained on the recorded brain waves of his deceased mother. Turn the pages of this book to follow Theo and Robin in their emotional journey. (Published by WW. Norton & Company)

Bewilderment is a heartstring tugger you aren't prepared for. The complexities of life, the love between a father and son, the struggles of change, and the heartbreak of honesty are all wrapped up in a deeply descriptive story. Again and again, Theo and Robin often find solace and connection in the natural world. Smoke on the Mountain from @wisecraft_mixology is the perfect drink to take comfort in while reading this wonderful novel, but don’t forget the tissues and the Asama Mountain glass from Kori Whiskey.

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and stir with ice until thoroughly chilled.  Strain into the glass of your preference and express the orange skin over the drink.

Nobody’s perfect, she liked to say. But, man, we all fall short so beautifully.
