Grunt + Rum Signature Serve
Grunt by Mary Roach is science writing at its finest and, come to think of it, most digestible. Grunt is about the science of the military, but not in the way you might think. It is NOT about how the military makes bigger badder weapons. But, it is all about the small and surprising thoughtful scientific efforts put into keeping people alive. Roach spends time with scientists who are utilizing chicken guns to learn how to keep aircraft windows in one piece when they are inevitably hit by birds in flight. She learns about how male genitalia is being rebuilt, literally from the ground up, into a functioning piece of the human body again (yes, you can thank the transgender community for advancements in penis surgery). And, among other things, Roach tackles the ways diarrhea is not just a personal booty issue, but an issue of national security. The service itself looks like science with all the smoke, but more importantly it clearly takes advantage of the science of one’s sense. There is smoke to smell and a combination of dark chocolate, rum, and orange to play with on the tongue. Have some science in your mouth and some science in your brain and get bookish + boozy.
