The Remains of the Day + The Last Word
“The Remains of the Day” by Kazuo Ishiguro is a story about Stevens, a butler, who has dedicated his life to the proper service of Lord Darlington. Be ready for some time traveling because this whole story is told through a series of flashbacks triggered by receiving a letter from Ms, Keaton, a long departed housekeeper. After reading too deeply into the letter, Stevens decides to visit Ms. Keaton and during this journey he reflects on his life. He ponders what it means to be a great butler, the true nature of dignity, his dedication to Lord Darlington and if this dedication was deserved, his relationship with his father, and his relationship (or lack thereof) with Ms. Keaton. Stevens is so reserved it hurts and his social missteps are large and glaring in hindsight. Seems to me he would have done well to have a nip or two of something boozy. Why he didn’t get into Lord Darlington's possibly substantial booze collection is beyond me. Anyhow, in the twilight of his life, he moves forward and figures out what to do with the remains of his day (Published by Faber & Faber)
Stevens’ reflections on life reveal the truth that life is a combination of sweet and sour, of steadfast beliefs and new understandings, and the realization of missed opportunities gone by. The Last Word is the perfect cocktail pairing for this read as they both allude to endings and summations. Take a look at this delicious variation, mix it up, grab “The Remains of the Day”, and get bookish + boozy.
