“The Girl With All the Gifts” by M.R. Carey tells the story of a young girl named Melanie who just wants to be loved and hugged by her teacher, Miss. Justineau. Every morning at gunpoint, she is physically strapped to a wheelchair to start her day. It turns out that the whole being completely bound to a wheelchair really hinders the physical contact thing. But, then again, it is the same for all the children in her class… but only when they leave their cells. This post-apocalyptic thriller and ethical mess strips away humanity on so many levels, but leaves a core that is heartfelt, honest, and supremely human.
