Drinking and reading - two of my most favorite past times. Wrap your fingers around a drink and get lost in the pages of a book.

The Lacuna + The Oro Roso

The Lacuna + The Oro Roso

“The Lacuna” by Barbara Kingsolver

This is a epic historical fiction novel set in both Mexico and the United States spanning the life of Harrison Shepherd. His childhood and young adult life was spent in Mexico. First, with his inattentive mother, and then in the employ of Diego Rivera as a plaster mixer followed by assuming the responsibilities of the household cook. As the book progresses, Shepherd forms a lasting relationship with Frieda Kahlo. However, Shepherd leaves the employ of the Riveras to become secretary to the exiled Leo Trotsky. Eventually, he makes his way to North Carolina and becomes a novelist. His world comes to pieces as he is investigated by the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. Harrison Shepherd is unapologetically and quietly himself, but you feel a deep sense of unfinishedness and loss with his character… a lacuna, an absence, or a gap. This theme runs deep and wide throughout the whole of this novel. Long, winding, and an ambitious balance of historical accuracy tangled in a web of fiction. What a beauty…

A cocktail that is a surprising balancing act hits home as the perfect partner for such a novel that thrives on balance, partnership, and unexpected opposites. Two-countries, but not quite belonging; strong opinions, yet soft spoke; a few deep relationships, but not connected - smokey Mezcal and delicate rose flavors. The Oro Roso is Mezcal driven, but gentle and understated with the Rose infusion.
